Van Gogh Inspired Landscape Collage

 Description

This lesson included an artist integration. We learned about Vincent Van Gogh, his early works, influences, style, self-portraits, and his final years, including selling only one painting during his life. We also discussed his Starry Night painting and wrote down any information we learned about him while watching a short video.

We then created our own version of the famous Starry Night painting. To start, we glued multiple pieces of tissue paper to a large sheet of construction paper (18" x 24"). After we had our construction paper covered with tissue paper, we added a layer of Modge Podge.

We were then able to choose a landscape to add to our background. The landscape was drawn on black construction paper and cut out. This was glued to the bottom of the paper. We then added more details using oil pastels. I chose to do the beach because I love any place warm and I love palm trees, so I thought with he bright sunset background, the palm trees and dolphin would stand out.

Extension:
An extension activity that would work with this project would be for students to create a collaborative piece that we could display in the school. All students would be responsible for covering a certain amount of space using whatever color tissue paper they would like. They would then move to a different portion of the collage to add details using oil pastels. As a class, we would create a landscape that represents our school.
